Founded in 1991, the World Wide Web has formed the backbone of modern society for a long time now; with WiFi dominating our day to day lives – how we communicate with our friends and family, how we work, and how we access information (we can’t count on all our fingers the amount of times we hear variations of the phrase “just Google it” when we’re out and about).
Sometimes, with the speed at which technology is currently developing, it can feel like everything online has already been done. So, in this ever evolving digital world, where being online is crucial to your business, what’s the future of web design?
The way in which websites were designed and built is very different now to how they were designed and built even 10 months ago, let alone 10 or 25 years ago. As technology advances and the way we access the internet evolves with these new technologies, so does the way we make websites. As a result, the theories behind the future of web design are always changing too.
1. Multi-device audiences and the future of web design
In April 2015, Google – the biggest search engine in the world – changed its rules on mobile searches, and declared that any website which was non-responsive (i.e. NOT mobile friendly) would not be displayed on search results made on mobile devices. This was a huge deal at the time and still is today! With 80% of searches made from mobile devices – tablets, mobile phones etc. – if your website isn’t responsive, you’re automatically losing potentially 80% of your traffic!
Understandably, this is still making waves in the digital world, and some leading experts believe that multi-device audiences and a ‘mobile-first’ ethos is what’s coming next. Which makes sense when considering the future of web design and Google’s rules; narrowing the focus and tightening its rules on the way things are displayed on mobiles – favouring large buttons to make using websites on touch screens easier, for example, and making social media buttons on websites a must if you want to get found.
2. The internet of things and the future of web design
According to Gartner Inc. (a global leading technology research company), there will be 20.8 billion devices worldwide on the internet by 2020. That’s a lot of devices! And this, in a nutshell, is the internet of things; objects connected to each other by the internet. This has kickstarted another theory regarding the future of web design: the distinctions made between product design, graphic design, and interface design will become more blurred as differing technologies are able to communication with each other and accomplish more, with less input from the end user.
3. The future of web design and simplification; the focus on the mobile-user’s experience
As mentioned in our first point, the mobile user has been the priority player in web design for a while now, and as a result, some feel the future of web design lies in the simplification of websites, and tailoring websites to best fit the experiences of the mobile-user.
Once plain, long, complicated, and copy heavy, with multiple pages and cumbersome drop-down menus; websites are now leaning towards being as concise and simple as possible – using images and videos wherever possible, large buttons for touchscreens, and as few pages as information can fit into.
